Have a look at our recommended reads for this month.
These books are available on Amazon as well as in your local Waterstones.
This week, our lovely Year 6 children have begun being ‘book buddies’ for some of the younger children. At lunch time, Year 1 and Year 2 children have the opportunity to meet up with their book buddy and be read to, as well as doing some reading themselves. As you can see, the younger children are loving the reading time, and our older children are relishing the responsibility. Long may it continue!
We were thrilled to have a visit from the best-selling author Piers Torday. He did full sessions with Years 4,5 and 6 and read a story to Year 2. Some children also ate lunch with him, and visited the library with him. We are also thrilled to announce that Piers will work with school all year as our Patron of Reading!

We were very lucky this afternoon to have a visit from the children’s author Frank Cottrell-Boyce. He spent some time in Year 4 where he answered lots of questions and read them a bit of his novel ‘Cosmic’. He then came to Year 6 (who have studied Millions) and answered lots of their questions. After this, he spoke to Year 4,5 and 6 in the hall about what inspired him to be a writer, and what some of his stories were inspired by. He spoke at length about how you need to read lots of books and stories to be able to do any of the amazing things you want to do in life. The children had lots of amazing questions and were really inspired to read more books. What a great afternoon!
Today we were very lucky at St Silas to have a visit from Google. They brought along their virtual reality headsets and everyone in Key Stage Two went on some special expeditions. We went to many exciting places: The Amazon, The Giza Pyramids, Seven Wonders Of The World, Borneo Rainforest, Chernobyl, Burj Khalifa, Antarctica, San Diego Zoo and even The Moon!
Our Digital Leaders received some training to lead the sessions:
Then they ran the sessions all afternoon. What a great afternoon it was!
Take a look at what our amazing Digital Leaders from Year 6 have been doing around school this half term. They have been really busy!
Helping Year 1 with their English work:
Teaching other children how to code using Scratch
Got to grips with Google Expeditions, so they can run an in-school session with KS2
Worked with children to build obstacle courses and programme Spheros to go through them
Assisted in setting up and running a Google Classroom in Year 6
Helped Year 3 and 4 children hone their word processing skills
Well done to our eco-council – they have worked very hard and earned St Silas the Silver Award for Eco Schools!
